Useful tourist information

HOTEL RESIDENCIA GRAN VÍA is in the historic centre of Salamanca. This city is probably best known for having the oldest University in Spain and one of oldest in Europe.

This student tradition gives it a special atmosphere, with hundreds of young people who crowd together in its old streets having the time of their lives in its countless typical venues, until the early hours of the morning.

The other thing that makes it unique is its ancient charm, with a historic centre whose architectural purity remains intact. Not surprisingly, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This concentration of beautiful buildings, the atmosphere of culture seemingly floating in the air and the magical glow of the golden stone all around you in even the more recent buildings combine to sensational effect.

Salamanca is a real gem, both for its wealth of monuments and for the beauty of the raw materials used in their construction. All of the buildings in the old quarter, including the new ones, have been built using stone from Villamayor. Thanks to its texture, intricate carving is possible in this stone and its iron content (which rusts in contact with air) illuminates the city with its characteristic golden gleam, most particularly at dusk.

It is not only the city's appearance that makes visitors fall in love with it, but its unique cultural atmosphere that, like a good wine, gets better over time. This indescribable charm is what made so many famous locals fall in love with the city. Salamanca, generous and cultured, has not forgotten them and keeps a reminder of them in the city's monuments.
